A beautifully
finished wall clock made from English walnut in the late 1800's. Designed
to catch your attention and keep it, it was specifically made for the
New Zealand Parliament.
Being an electric low voltage clock, it could be controlled from a small switching box positioned next to the Speaker's chair. It allowed for up to 1 hour speaking time for whoever was on their feet at the time. "King Dick" himself, Sir Richard Seddon, was Prime Minister during this clock's tenure so he would be very conversant with it and would have been subject to its strict interpretation of time. In those days "Mr Speaker" was a force to be reckoned with and not to be trifled with. It was finally replaced in 1903 after many years faithful service. |
